Maghrib Prayer Step-by-Step Guide

Maghrib is the sunset prayer — the fourth prayer of the day. It is performed immediately after sunset and has the shortest obligatory prayer: only 3 rakats. Maghrib marks the transition from day to night.

Quick Overview

Maghrib consists of 3 rakats fard (obligatory). With sunnah prayers after, total can be 5 rakats. Time: from sunset until the twilight (red sky) disappears.

When to Pray Maghrib

The time for Maghrib begins immediately after sunset and ends when the red twilight (red sky) disappears from the horizon. It is best to pray Maghrib as soon as possible after sunset — the Prophet (peace be upon him) never delayed it.

How Many Rakats for Maghrib

  • 3 rakats Fard — obligatory, these are the essential rakats
  • 2 rakats Sunnah Muakkadah — highly recommended after the fard prayer

Total rakats: 5 rakats (3 Fard + 2 Sunnah)

Step-by-Step Maghrib Prayer Guide

Step 1: Make Your Intention (Niyyah)

In your heart, intend to pray 3 rakats of Maghrib fard prayer for Allah.

Step 2: Begin with Takbiratul Ihram

Stand facing the Qibla, raise your hands to your ears, and say "Allahu Akbar".

Step 3: Recite Surah Al-Fatihah and a Short Surah

Recite Al-Fatihah and a short surah out loud (in a moderate voice) for the first two rakats of Maghrib.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Transliteration: Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

Translation: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful."

Step 4: Perform Ruku and Sujood

Follow the same ruku and sujood steps as in other prayers. Remember to recite "Subhana Rabbiyal Adhim" in ruku and "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" in sujood, three times each.

Step 5: Complete 3 Rakats

After the second rakat, sit and recite the Tashahhud. Then stand for the third rakat. In the third rakat, recite only Al-Fatihah (no short surah after it). After the third sujood, sit and recite the full Tashahhud and Salawat.

Transliteration: At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat.

Translation: "All greetings, prayers, and good things are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His messenger."

Step 6: End with Tasleem

Turn your head to the right and left, saying "Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah".

Beginner Tip: Maghrib is the only prayer with 3 fard rakats. This can be confusing at first because most prayers have 4 rakats. Remember: first two rakats = out loud recitation with short surah. Third rakat = quiet recitation with Al-Fatihah only.

Why Is Maghrib Different?

Maghrib has 3 rakats because it was revealed this way to the Prophet (peace be upon him) during his journey of Miraj (ascension to heaven). The 2 rakats of sunnah after Maghrib are highly recommended and were never missed by the Prophet.
