How to Pray Salah Step by Step for Beginners

Learning how to pray Salah can feel overwhelming at first. There are steps, positions, rakats, and recitations to remember. But do not worry — this guide will walk you through every step of Salah in a simple, beginner-friendly way. By the end of this article, you will have a clear understanding of how to perform Salah with confidence.

Quick Overview

Salah is the Islamic prayer performed five times daily. This guide covers: Wudu (ablution), Qibla direction, intention (niyyah), standing (Qiyam), bowing (Ruku), prostrating (Sujood), sitting, and ending (Tasleem).

What Is Salah?

Salah is the Islamic prayer performed five times daily. It is a physical, spiritual, and mental act of worship that connects a Muslim to Allah. The five daily prayers are:

  • Fajr — before dawn (2 rakats fard)
  • Dhuhr — midday (4 rakats fard)
  • Asr — afternoon (4 rakats fard)
  • Maghrib — just after sunset (3 rakats fard)
  • Isha — night (4 rakats fard)

Before You Start: Wudu, Qibla, and Intention

Before praying Salah, you need to prepare three things. Think of this as your pre-flight checklist before takeoff.

1. Wudu (Ablution)

Wudu is the ritual washing before prayer. It purifies you physically and spiritually. Here are the steps:

  • Wash your hands three times
  • Rinse your mouth three times
  • Rinse your nose three times
  • Wash your face three times
  • Wash your arms to the elbows three times (right then left)
  • Wipe your head once (from front to back)
  • Wipe your ears (inside and out)
  • Wash your feet to the ankles three times (right then left)

2. Qibla (Direction)

Face the Qibla, which is the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. You can use a Qibla compass or a smartphone app to find the direction from your location.

3. Niyyah (Intention)

Make your intention in your heart. You do not need to say it out loud. For example: "I intend to pray 2 rakats of Fajr prayer for Allah." That is it — simple and sincere.

Step-by-Step Salah Guide

1. Qiyam (Standing Position)

Stand upright, facing the Qibla. Raise your hands to your ears and say "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the Greatest). This is called Takbiratul Ihram. Then place your right hand over your left on your chest. Recite Surah Al-Fatiha and another short surah.

2. Ruku (Bowing Position)

Say "Allahu Akbar" and bow forward. Place your hands on your knees and keep your back straight. In this position, recite "Subhana Rabbiyal Adhim" (Glory be to my Lord, the Almighty) three times.

3. Sujood (Prostration Position)

Say "Allahu Akbar" and go down to prostrate. Your forehead, nose, palms, knees, and toes should touch the ground. Recite "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High) three times.

4. Sitting Between Sujood

Say "Allahu Akbar" and sit up on your left leg. Keep your right foot upright. Say "Rabbighfir li" (My Lord forgive me). Then do a second Sujood with the same recitation.

5. Tasleem (Ending the Prayer)

After completing all rakats, turn your head to the right and say "Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah" (Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah). Then turn your head to the left and say the same. Your prayer is now complete.

Beginner Tip: Do not worry about being perfect from day one. Start with one prayer at a time. Focus on getting the movements right first, then slowly add the recitations. Allah sees your effort, and every small step counts.

Common Beginner Mistakes (And How to Fix Them)

  • Rushing through steps: Take your time. Salah is meant to be calm and focused. Quality matters more than speed.
  • Forgetting how many rakats you prayed: Use finger counting or try a smart prayer mat that tracks for you.
  • Reciting too fast to memorize: Practice one recitation at a time, not all at once. Repeat it throughout your day.
  • Incorrect posture: Watch videos online or use guided instruction to learn the correct positions. Practice in front of a mirror.
