Fajr Prayer Step-by-Step Guide

Fajr is the dawn prayer — the first prayer of the day. It is performed before sunrise, and it sets the spiritual tone for your entire day. While waking up for Fajr can be challenging at first, many Muslims will tell you that it becomes the most peaceful and rewarding part of their day.

Quick Overview

Fajr consists of 2 rakats fard (obligatory) and 2 rakats sunnah (recommended before). Total: 4 rakats. Time: from dawn until just before sunrise.

When to Pray Fajr

The time for Fajr begins at true dawn (when a white thread of light appears horizontally across the sky) and ends just before sunrise. It is best to pray Fajr as early as possible within this time window.

How Many Rakats for Fajr

  • 2 rakats Sunnah Muakkadah — highly recommended, the Prophet never missed them
  • 2 rakats Fard — obligatory, these are the essential rakats

Total rakats: 4 rakats (2 Sunnah + 2 Fard)

Step-by-Step Fajr Prayer Guide

Step 1: Make Your Intention (Niyyah)

In your heart, intend to pray 2 rakats of Fajr fard prayer for Allah. You do not need to say this out loud.

Step 2: Begin with Takbiratul Ihram

Stand facing the Qibla, raise your hands to your ears, and say "Allahu Akbar".

Step 3: Recite Surah Al-Fatihah

In a quiet voice (not whispered, but not loud), recite Al-Fatihah. This is required in every rakat.

Transliteration: Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

Translation: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful."

Step 4: Recite a Short Surah

After Al-Fatihah, recite any short surah. Surah Al-Ikhlas is a great choice for beginners.

Transliteration: Qul huwallahu ahad

Translation: "Say: He is Allah, the One."

Step 5: Perform Ruku (Bowing)

Say "Allahu Akbar" and bow forward. Place your hands on your knees and keep your back straight. Recite "Subhana Rabbiyal Adhim" three times.

Transliteration: Subhana Rabbiyal Adhim

Translation: "Glory be to my Lord, the Almighty."

Step 6: Rise from Ruku

Say "Sami'Allahu liman hamidah" (Allah hears those who praise Him) as you rise. Then say "Rabbana lakal hamd" (Our Lord, to You is all praise).

Step 7: Perform Sujood (Prostration)

Say "Allahu Akbar" and go down to prostrate. Your forehead, nose, palms, knees, and toes should touch the ground. Recite "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" three times.

Transliteration: Subhana Rabbiyal A'la

Translation: "Glory be to my Lord, the Most High."

Step 8: Sit Briefly

Say "Allahu Akbar" and sit up. Say "Rabbighfir li" (My Lord forgive me).

Step 9: Second Sujood

Say "Allahu Akbar" and perform a second sujood, reciting "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" three times.

Step 10: Stand for Second Rakat

Say "Allahu Akbar" and stand up. Repeat steps 3 through 9 for the second rakat.

Step 11: Recite Tashahhud

After the second sujood of the second rakat, sit and recite the Tashahhud.

Transliteration: At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat.

Translation: "All greetings, prayers, and good things are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His messenger."

Step 12: End with Tasleem

Turn your head to the right and say "Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah". Then turn to the left and say the same.

Beginner Tip: The hardest part of Fajr is waking up. Place your alarm clock or phone across the room so you have to get out of bed to turn it off. Once you are on your feet, it is much easier to make wudu and pray. After a few weeks, it becomes a beautiful habit.

What About the Sunnah Rakats?

The 2 rakats of Sunnah before Fajr are highly recommended. They are prayed exactly the same way as the fard prayer (2 rakats), but with the intention of Sunnah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that these two rakats are better than the entire world and everything in it.
