Short Surahs for Salah Beginners
After reciting Al-Fatihah, you need to recite a short surah in the first two rakats of each prayer. For beginners, memorizing long surahs can feel impossible. The good news is that the shortest surahs of the Quran are also some of the most powerful. This guide provides 10 short surahs that are easy to memorize.

Surah Al-Fatihah (Review)
Before learning new surahs, make sure you have mastered Al-Fatihah. It is recited in every single rakat.
1. Surah Al-Ikhlas (The Sincerity)
قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ
1. Qul huwallahu ahad — "Say: He is Allah, the One."
اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ
2. Allahus samad — "Allah, the Eternal Refuge."
لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ
3. Lam yalid wa lam yulad — "He neither begets nor is born."
وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ
4. Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad — "Nor is there to Him any equivalent."
2. Surah Al-Falaq (Daybreak)
قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ
1. Qul a'udhu birabbil-falaq — "Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of daybreak."
مِن شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ
2. Min sharri ma khalaq — "From the evil of what He has created."
وَمِن شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ
3. Wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqab — "From the evil of darkness when it settles."
وَمِن شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ
4. Wa min sharrin-naffathati fil-'uqad — "From the evil of those who blow on knots."
وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ
5. Wa min sharri hasidin idha hasad — "From the evil of an envier when he envies."
3. Surah An-Nas (Mankind)
قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ
1. Qul a'udhu birabbin-nas — "Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind."
مَلِكِ النَّاسِ
2. Malikin-nas — "The King of mankind."
إِلَهِ النَّاسِ
3. Ilahin-nas — "The God of mankind."
مِن شَرِّ الْوَسْوَاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ
4. Min sharril-waswasil-khannas — "From the evil of the whisperer who withdraws."
الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ
5. Alladhi yuwaswisu fi sudurin-nas — "Who whispers into the hearts of mankind."
مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ
6. Minal-jinnati wan-nas — "From among the jinn and mankind."
4. Surah Al-Kawthar (Abundance)
إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ
1. Inna a'taynaka kawthar — "Indeed, We have granted you abundance."
فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ
2. Fasalli lirabbika wanhar — "So pray to your Lord and sacrifice."
إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ الْأَبْتَرُ
3. Inna shani'aka huwal abtar — "Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off."
5. Surah Al-Asr (Time)
وَالْعَصْرِ
1. Wal-'asr — "By time."
إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ
2. Innal-insana lafi khusr — "Indeed, mankind is in loss."
إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ
3. Illa alladhina amanu wa 'amilus-salihati wa tawasaw bil-haqqi wa tawasaw bis-sabr — "Except those who believe, do good deeds, encourage truth, and encourage patience."
6. Surah Al-Ma'un (Small Acts of Kindness)
أَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي يُكَذِّبُ بِالدِّينِ
1. Ara'aytalladhi yukadhibu bid-din — "Have you seen the one who denies the judgment?"
فَذَٰلِكَ الَّذِي يَدُعُّ الْيَتِيمَ
2. Fadhalikalladhi yadu''ul-yatim — "That is the one who repulses the orphan."
وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ
3. Wa la yahuddu 'ala ta'am-il-miskin — "And does not encourage the feeding of the poor."
فَوَيْلٌ لِّلْمُصَلِّينَ
4. Fawaylun lil-musallin — "So woe to those who pray."
الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَن صَلَاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ
5. Alladhina hum 'an salatihim sahun — "Those who are heedless of their prayer."
الَّذِينَ هُمْ يُرَاءُونَ
6. Alladhina hum yura'un — "Those who show off."
وَيَمْنَعُونَ الْمَاعُونَ
7. Wa yamna'unal-ma'un — "And withhold small acts of kindness."
7. Surah Quraysh
لِإِيلَافِ قُرَيْشٍ
1. Li-ilafi quraysh — "For the accustomed security of Quraysh."
إِيلَافِهِمْ رِحْلَةَ الشِّتَاءِ وَالصَّيْفِ
2. Ilafihim rihlatash-shita'i was-sayf — "Their accustomed security in the winter and summer journeys."
فَلْيَعْبُدُوا رَبَّ هَٰذَا الْبَيْتِ
3. Falya'budu rabba hadhal-bayt — "Let them worship the Lord of this House."
الَّذِي أَطْعَمَهُم مِّن جُوعٍ وَآمَنَهُم مِّنْ خَوْفٍ
4. Alladhi at'amahum min ju'in wa amanahum min khawf — "Who has fed them against hunger and made them safe from fear."
8. Surah Al-Fil (The Elephant)
أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصْحَابِ الْفِيلِ
1. Alam tara kayfa fa'ala rabbuka bi-as-habil-fil — "Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant?"
أَلَمْ يَجْعَلْ كَيْدَهُمْ فِي تَضْلِيلٍ
2. Alam yaj'al kaydahum fi tadlil — "Did He not make their plan go astray?"
وَأَرْسَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ طَيْرًا أَبَابِيلَ
3. Wa arsala 'alayhim tayran ababil — "And He sent against them birds in flocks."
تَرْمِيهِم بِحِجَارَةٍ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ
4. Tarmihim bihijaratin min sijjil — "Striking them with stones of baked clay."
فَجَعَلَهُمْ كَعَصْفٍ مَّأْكُولٍ
5. Faja'alahum ka'asfin ma'kul — "And He made them like eaten straw."
9. Surah Al-Humazah (The Slanderer)
وَيْلٌ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةٍ
1. Waylun likulli humazatil-lumazah — "Woe to every slanderer and backbiter."
الَّذِي جَمَعَ مَالًا وَعَدَّدَهُ
2. Alladhi jama'a malan wa 'addadah — "Who collects wealth and counts it."
يَحْسَبُ أَنَّ مَالَهُ أَخْلَدَهُ
3. Yahsabu anna malahu akhladah — "He thinks his wealth will make him immortal."
كَلَّا ۖ لَيُنْبَذَنَّ فِي الْحُطَمَةِ
4. Kalla layunbadhanna fil-hutamah — "No! He will surely be thrown into the Crusher."
وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْحُطَمَةُ
5. Wa ma adraka mal-hutamah — "And what can make you know what the Crusher is?"
نَارُ اللَّهِ الْمُوقَدَةُ
6. Narullahil-muqadah — "The fire of Allah, kindled."
الَّتِي تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى الْأَفْئِدَةِ
7. Allati tattali'u 'alal-af'idah — "Which mounts over the hearts."
إِنَّهَا عَلَيْهِم مُّؤْصَدَةٌ
8. Innahu 'alayhim mu'sadah — "Indeed, it will be closed down upon them."
فِي عَمَدٍ مُّمَدَّدَةٍ
9. Fi 'amadin mumaddadah — "In extended columns."
10. Surah Al-Qadr (The Power)
إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ
1. Inna anzalnahu fi laylatil-qadr — "Indeed, We sent it down on the Night of Power."
وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ
2. Wa ma adraka ma laylatul-qadr — "And what can make you know what the Night of Power is?"
لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ
3. Laylatul-qadri khayrum min alfi shahr — "The Night of Power is better than a thousand months."
تَنَزَّلُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ فِيهَا بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِم مِّن كُلِّ أَمْرٍ
4. Tanazzalul-mala'ikatu war-ruhu fiha bi-idhni rabbihim min kulli amr — "The angels and the Spirit descend therein by the permission of their Lord for every matter."
سَلَامٌ هِيَ حَتَّىٰ مَطْلَعِ الْفَجْرِ
5. Salamun hiya hatta matla'il-fajr — "Peace it is until the emergence of dawn."
Memorization Plan: Start with Surah Al-Ikhlas (4 verses). Practice it for 3 days. Then add Surah Al-Kawthar (3 verses). Then add Al-Falaq and An-Nas together (they are often called "Al-Mu'awwidhatayn"). Within 2 weeks, you will have 5 surahs memorized.
