Isha Prayer Step-by-Step Guide
Isha is the night prayer — the fifth and final prayer of the day. It is performed after twilight has disappeared and can be prayed until midnight. Isha is the longest of the five prayers and includes the highly recommended Witr prayer.
Quick Overview
Isha consists of 4 rakats fard (obligatory). With sunnah and Witr, total can be 13 rakats. Time: from when twilight disappears until midnight.
When to Pray Isha
The time for Isha begins when the red twilight (red sky) disappears from the horizon. It lasts until midnight (midway between sunset and dawn). It is recommended to pray Isha before midnight, but it can be prayed until dawn in necessary cases.

Step-by-Step Isha Prayer Guide
Step 1: Make Your Intention (Niyyah)
In your heart, intend to pray 4 rakats of Isha fard prayer for Allah.
Step 2: Begin with Takbiratul Ihram
Stand facing the Qibla, raise your hands to your ears, and say "Allahu Akbar".
Step 3: Recite Surah Al-Fatihah and a Short Surah
Recite Al-Fatihah and a short surah out loud (in a moderate voice) for the first two rakats.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Transliteration: Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
Translation: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful."
Step 4: Perform Ruku and Sujood
Follow the same ruku and sujood steps as in other prayers.
Step 5: Complete 4 Rakats
After the second rakat, sit and recite the Tashahhud. Then stand for the remaining two rakats. In the third and fourth rakats, recite only Al-Fatihah (no short surah). After the fourth sujood, sit and recite the full Tashahhud and Salawat.
Step 6: End with Tasleem
Turn your head to the right and left, saying "Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah".
Beginner Tip: Isha is prayed out loud for the first two rakats (like Maghrib) and quietly for the last two rakats (like Dhuhr and Asr). This can be confusing at first, but NoorConnect's app will remind you which rakat you are on.
What Is the Witr Prayer?
Witr is a highly recommended prayer prayed after Isha. It consists of 3 rakats and is often called the "odd-numbered" prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Allah has given you an extra prayer — Witr. Pray it between Isha and dawn."
