Dhuhr Prayer Step-by-Step Guide

Dhuhr is the midday prayer — the second prayer of the day. It is performed when the sun begins to decline from its zenith (highest point) until the shadow of an object becomes equal to its length. This prayer offers a peaceful break in the middle of a busy day.

Quick Overview

Dhuhr consists of 4 rakats fard (obligatory). With sunnah prayers before and after, total can be 10 rakats. Time: from just after noon until Asr prayer.

When to Pray Dhuhr

The time for Dhuhr begins immediately after the sun passes its zenith (highest point at noon) and lasts until the shadow of an object becomes equal to its length. It is best to pray Dhuhr early within this time window.

Total rakats: 10 rakats (4 Sunnah + 4 Fard + 2 Sunnah)

Step-by-Step Dhuhr Prayer Guide

Step 1: Make Your Intention (Niyyah)

In your heart, intend to pray 4 rakats of Dhuhr fard prayer for Allah. You do not need to say this out loud.

Step 2: Begin with Takbiratul Ihram

Stand facing the Qibla, raise your hands to your ears, and say "Allahu Akbar".

Step 3: Recite Surah Al-Fatihah

Recite Al-Fatihah quietly. This is required in every rakat.

Transliteration: Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

Translation: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful."

Step 4: Recite a Short Surah

After Al-Fatihah in the first two rakats only, recite any short surah.

Transliteration: Qul huwallahu ahad

Translation: "Say: He is Allah, the One."

Step 5: Perform Ruku (Bowing)

Say "Allahu Akbar" and bow forward. Recite "Subhana Rabbiyal Adhim" three times.

Transliteration: Subhana Rabbiyal Adhim

Translation: "Glory be to my Lord, the Almighty."

Step 6: Rise from Ruku

Say "Sami'Allahu liman hamidah" then "Rabbana lakal hamd".

Step 7: Perform Sujood (Prostration)

Say "Allahu Akbar" and go down to prostrate. Recite "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" three times.

Transliteration: Subhana Rabbiyal A'la

Step 8: Sit Briefly and Second Sujood

Say "Allahu Akbar" and sit up. Say "Rabbighfir li". Then perform a second sujood.

Step 9: Complete 4 Rakats

Repeat steps 3 through 8 for all 4 rakats. After the second rakat, sit and recite the Tashahhud. Then stand for the remaining two rakats. After the fourth rakat, recite the full Tashahhud and Salawat.

Transliteration: At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat.

Translation: "All greetings, prayers, and good things are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His messenger."

Step 10: End with Tasleem

Turn your head to the right and left, saying "Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah" each time.

Beginner Tip: Dhuhr is the longest of the five prayers. If you are just starting, focus on learning the 4 fard rakats first. Once you are comfortable, add the sunnah prayers before and after. The reward for sunnah prayers is immense.

Why Are There Sunnah Prayers Before and After Dhuhr?

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) consistently prayed 4 rakats before Dhuhr and 2 rakats after. These sunnah prayers help you prepare for the fard prayer and extend the blessings afterward. They are a beautiful way to earn extra reward.
