Asr Prayer Step-by-Step Guide

Asr is the afternoon prayer — the third prayer of the day. It is performed when the shadow of an object becomes equal to its length until just before sunset. Asr is often called the "middle prayer" and holds special importance in the Quran.

Quick Overview

Asr consists of 4 rakats fard (obligatory). Some schools also pray 4 rakats sunnah before. Total with sunnah: 8 rakats. Time: from late afternoon until sunset.

When to Pray Asr

The time for Asr begins when the shadow of an object becomes equal to its length (plus the length of its shadow at noon). It ends just before sunset. It is highly recommended to pray Asr early, as delaying it until the sun turns pale is discouraged.

How Many Rakats for Asr

  • 4 rakats Sunnah Ghair Muakkadah — optional, good to pray but not required
  • 4 rakats Fard — obligatory, these are the essential rakats

Total rakats: 8 rakats (4 Sunnah + 4 Fard) — or 4 rakats if you pray only the fard

Beginner Tip: The Quran mentions "the middle prayer" (Al-Wusta) in Surah Al-Baqarah. Many scholars believe this refers to Asr. Do your best to never miss Asr — it holds a special place in Allah's eyes.

The Importance of Asr Prayer

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever misses the Asr prayer, it is as if he has lost his family and his wealth." This shows how important it is to protect this prayer. If you are at work or school, set an alarm to remind you when Asr time enters.
